After the class debates that we had, where I personnaly don't think the mass media is that effective, I attempted to find something relevent to show that the mass media does not always get the better stories. It wasn't until the weekend that I was able to find such a story. This was partly due to the media coverage of thedeath and funeral of Sen. Edward Kennedy. But as I was trying to find a story, I happened to hear an audio clip on the "Neal Boortz " show, that was just perfect to show how the mass media is selective in what they choose to give to the people. The story is in regards to California Congresswoman Diane Watson, and in an speech to her constituents, trying to support the public option on health care reform, she praises and glorifies Fidel Castro down in cuba. Nor philisophically I absolutely disagree with the thought that the United States in any way should be moving toward a system such as that of cuba.

I think that this was an extremely poor choice of words, but I don't particularly disagree with her sentiment. Yes, it's true that Castro is by no means a good leader. Does that mean that the health care programs he initiated are horrible monstrosities? If you answered yes to this, does the fact that Hitler was a dog person mean that dogs are agents of pure evil?
ReplyDeleteWe really need to stop this whole demonization of our political enemies, making it so that they have nothing to offer the world. An idea carries the same legitimacy and value regardless of whether it's endorsed by Ghandi or the Unabomber. Whas it the best example for her to use? Of course not. However, someone you don't like doing something should have absolutely no bearing on its merits.
How does this pertain to the media not getting the best stories? You did get this story through a media outlet right?
ReplyDeleteYou do understand that even if we are to adopt a system like Cuba that America can afford it? Question for you...who cares more for their fellow citizens? Rich Americans or Castro.
